Midwives are responsible for helping parents safely bring their babies into the world. This involves working with pregnant women - before, during and after the birth of their baby. In 2020 there were over 51,000 midwives employed on temporary and permanent basis in the UK. Working a midwife job offers a unique and diverse career, providing guidance and support to patients and their families.
You will need an undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree or diploma in order to become a midwife. Some people choose to secure a place on a midwifery degree apprenticeship with a healthcare provider. Once you have qualified as a midwife, you must register with the NMC (The Nursing and Midwifery Council) to practice in the United Kingdom.
A midwife job provides exposure to a wide range of opportunities. Each day will be different, but typical responsibilities for a Midwife job are split across antenatal care (before the birth), care during the birth itself, and postnatal care. Your midwife job will require you to monitor the health of the parent and baby throughout the pregnancy and birth, promoting good health and explaining the various options available to parents in regards to the birth.
A career as a midwife can open a number of doors, including working in different healthcare settings or specialising in a certain area. Common areas of specialisation are antenatal screening, neonatal intensive care and parental education. Some people choose to become Midwife consultants, or to progress to a senior management position.
Newly qualified nurses will be paid the Band 5 rate of between £24,907 - £30,615 per year.
