If you are considering working as an agency nurse, or looking for a new job with a nursing agency, a good place to start is by creating your CV. As an established nursing recruiter, we’ve seen our fair share of CVs, so we’ve broken down the steps to creating your agency nurse CV below:

Format and Layout: Agency Nurse CV

When writing your CV, it’s important to make the information easy to read and understand. An easy way to do this is stick with a clear format and uncluttered layout. Use a professional font (such as Ariel or Times New Roman) in a size between 10pt and 12pt.

You will need to include:

  • your name and contact information,
  • Your education history and qualifications (with dates and the institution name)
  • Your work history (with dates, organisation, location, and bullet points below outlining your role)

You can organise your work history so that your most recent job is at the top, and the rest are listed in reverse chronological order. Additionally, some people like to add information about their hobbies and interests, to give a more rounded overview of them as an individual, as well as IT skills, language skills and whether you drive or not.

Specialist Nursing Skills

It’s important to highlight your specialist skills on your agency nurse CV. This can include any additional training, workshops, study days or courses you may have undertaken and not included in your “education history and qualifications” section.

Volumes and values in agency nursing

When writing about your work experience, something that can differentiate you is including information that is quantifiable. What size was your team? How many patients were you responsible for at any given time? By adding “volumes and values” to your agency nurse CV, you can elevate your experience.

For example “Provide quality care for patients” could be improved by adding a numerical value, “Provide quality care for up to 20 patients per day”. Equally, “Working with a multidisciplinary team” is much more insightful to the reader if we add some context “Working with a multidisciplinary team of 5 including a doctor and 3 other nurses”.

CV action words

Action words are key when bringing your experience to life on your CV. If you’re looking for agency nurse job, emotive language and action words will help you stand head and shoulders above your competition for roles. Action words are compelling, particularly when many CVs use the same expressions over and over, and will catch the hiring managers eye. Some examples of action words you can use on your agency nurse CV include:

  • Executed
  • Coordinated
  • Oversaw
  • Produced
  • Planned
  • Developed
  • Reduced
  • Achieved
  • Improved
  • Maximised
  • Facilitated

Check and check again

The best piece of advice when creating your agency nurse CV is check, check and CHECK AGAIN. Spelling and grammar errors on your CV will be a red flag to potential hirers and can be perceived as a lack of attention to detail. Be sure to read it yourself, and maybe ask a friend or relative to check for you too.
